A Goodbye 01:35

about

Recordings of one of the Isle of Man's most important modern poets: Paul Lebiedzinski.
These recordings made between 1976 and 1988 include his best-known and most significant works, including 'Lambfell Chapel' and 'Colonel Pimp'. It was originally released as a cassette tape by Culture Vannin in 1998.
An adapted version of the original sleeve notes by George Broderick is given below:

Paul Lebiedzinski was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, on 17 August 1951 to a Manx mother of Irish extraction and a Polish father who had served as a fighter pilot with the RAF during the Second World War. Paul was brought up in Ramsey, living at a variety of addresses. He attended St. Maughold’s RC School (now demolished) and Ramsey Grammar School. Although brilliant at English he was glad to leave school at 15 after apparently being subject to bullying and what he regarded as an excessive commitment to sport. He held a number of jobs until he became a self-employed gardener in 1977.
Although a Ramsey Town Commissioner on two occasions (1976-79 and 1988-90), Paul was best known as a poet of great vibrancy and vitality. He was especially known for his satirical political poems which could be incisive and full of invective. He could also produce outstanding serious material, some of which shows the caring side of Paul’s nature.
In recognition of Paul’s talent as a bard baile the local film unit Foillan Films made the bilingual Manx-English film 'Yn Gareyder' (The Gardener) in 1986 featuring Paul and his poetry.
Paul was also a musician, playing the mouth organ and button accordion and during the 1980s he joined up with Brian Stowell and George Broderick (and latterly Freddie Cowle) to form the loosely-knit group Ny Ravvalyn (The Rebels) to play Manx music with great gusto. It was at such sessions that Paul would recite his poetry. However, from 1993 onwards Paul began drinking heavily, and on 30 April 1995 he died at Noble’s Hospital, Douglas.
He will be missed by many. Yet his poetry, written in English but firmly set in the Manx tradition similar to that of Tom the Dipper (1800-79), will live on amongst those who knew him. As a mark of respect to Paul we have produced this selection of his own readings. Many of these recordings were made by Paul himself in far from ideal circumstances, but we feel that the quality of the material far outshines any short-comings there might be on the technical side.
We hope that this collection will serve as an everlasting memorial to him.
